Licences

Built on open source.

Berry stands on excellent open-source models and libraries. Their licences and copyright notices are below, exactly as they ship inside the apps.

# Berry – third-party notices Berry is your product. It is built on open-source components and models whose licences let you use them commercially, **provided their notices are kept** (this file, and the "Open-source licences" screen in the Android app). None of them are "copyleft" over Berry's own code. No GPL components are included. ## Models | Component | Used for | Licence | Copyright | |---|---|---|---| | Whistle speech model (`whistle.cact`) and Needle 3 (`needle3.cact`), Cactus engine (`libneedle`, `cactus-needle`) | speech-to-text, commands | Apache-2.0 | Cactus Compute, Inc. | | Qwen3.5 0.8B / 2B (GGUF builds by Unsloth) | chat | Apache-2.0 | Alibaba Cloud (Qwen team) | | Kokoro-82M (ONNX conversion by thewh1teagle/kokoro-onnx, MIT) | Berry's voice (laptop) | Apache-2.0 | hexgrad | | Whisper base (ONNX/int8 export by the sherpa-onnx project) | speech-to-text (laptop and phone) | MIT | OpenAI | | Moonshine v2 base (optional, laptop) | speech-to-text | MIT | Useful Sensors | | Zipformer keyword spotter, GigaSpeech 3.3M | "Hey Berry" on the phone | Apache-2.0 | k2-fsa / Next-gen Kaldi | | Silero VAD (`silero_vad.onnx`) | telling speech from silence and noise (laptop and phone) | MIT | Silero Team | ## Software (laptop) | Package | Licence | |---|---| | sherpa-onnx | Apache-2.0 (k2-fsa) | | llama.cpp / llama-cpp-python | MIT | | ONNX Runtime | MIT (Microsoft) | | misaki (pronunciation) | Apache-2.0 | | spaCy, en_core_web_sm, thinc, srsly, catalogue, cymem, preshed, murmurhash, wasabi, weasel, confection | MIT (Explosion AI) | | blis | BSD-3-Clause | | NumPy | BSD-3-Clause | | sounddevice (+ PortAudio) | MIT | | Pillow | MIT-CMU (HPND) | | comtypes | MIT | | huggingface_hub, hf-xet, requests, regex, diskcache, flatbuffers, packaging | Apache-2.0 | | pydantic, typer, rich, PyYAML, urllib3, six, docopt, addict, cffi, filelock | MIT | | protobuf, click, idna, httpx, httpcore, fsspec, MarkupSafe, Jinja2, colorama, wrapt | BSD | | certifi, tqdm | MPL-2.0 (used unmodified) | | **pystray** | LGPL-3.0 | | **num2words** | LGPL-2.1 | | **soxr** (python-soxr / libsoxr) | LGPL-2.1-or-later | The three LGPL packages are installed as separate, unmodified Python packages that users can replace. That is what the LGPL asks, and it doesn't affect Berry's own licence. If you ever *modify* one of them, publish those modifications. ## Software (Android app) | Component | Licence | |---|---| | Cactus engine (`libneedle.a`) | Apache-2.0, Cactus Compute, Inc. | | llama.cpp / ggml | MIT, The ggml authors | | sherpa-onnx | Apache-2.0, k2-fsa | | ONNX Runtime | MIT, Microsoft | | Kotlin, AndroidX, Jetpack Compose, Material components, kotlinx.coroutines | Apache-2.0 | ## What you must do when distributing Berry 1. Include this file (or the in-app licences screen) with every copy. 2. Don't present Cactus, Alibaba/Qwen, hexgrad or the other projects as endorsing Berry, and don't use their names or logos as your branding. Apache-2.0 doesn't grant trademark rights. 3. Keep the full licence texts available: Apache-2.0 <https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0>, MIT <https://opensource.org/license/mit>, LGPL <https://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl-3.0.html>, MPL-2.0 <https://www.mozilla.org/MPL/2.0/>. "Berry" itself: before launching commercially, search trademark registers in your markets (e.g. USPTO, EUIPO, IPO Pakistan) for software and assistant products named Berry. This file covers copyright licences, not trademarks.
